This was an enterprise story that required a month or so of reporting. I found the subject of the piece on a whim, and this story helped show the benefit of the Veterans Treatment Court, which was only a year old when I started reporting. I also learned how to hear and respond to difficult stories in an interview. This piece went on to win third place for best military story through the Missouri Press Association.
